San Pedro Bay Mapping and Signage Project
The SPBLA, with the assistance of the Florida Division of Forestry (DOF), Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD) and this grant, designed a comprehensive mapping and road signage project in the San Pedro Bay Wildfire Management Area (including portions of Taylor, Madison, Lafayette & Dixie Counties).
Phase I
Phase I of this grant project consisted of creating a GIS database and production of maps containing valuable fire management information including road names, ownerships & property boundaries, water sources & helicopter dip sites. Prior to completion of this phase, a comprehensive map of the area had not yet been produced and numerous inconsistencies existed with road names, water sources & helicopter dip site locations, access, etc. Since the completion of the original project, numerous updates have also been made to the original GIS information in an effort to improve maps of the area and to provide up-to-date information.
Project Phase I – Outcomes
• Printed maps for all landowners and managers. San Pedro Bay map (pdf, 5.2M)
• Data CD’s with GIS files for all landowners and managers
• Consistency in road names throughout the area
• A GIS data base for current and future use
• Closer working relationships between all parties involved
Phase II
Phase II of this grant project included the purchase of 706 reflective metal road signs to be installed throughout the San Pedro Bay in an effort to improve wildfire response and resource management in the San Pedro Bay. Since the completion of the original project, similar grant funds have been utilized to purchase additional signage.
Project Phase II – Outcomes
- Permanent Road Signage throughout the area
- Reduction in fire response times due to signage
- Improved access for recreation and forestry operations (in addition to firefighting)
- Improved fire safety as potential escape routes are clearly marked
- Signage in wildland/urban interface areas corresponds with established 911 addressing in each county
- Closer working relationships between all parties involved
