Tree City USA

Live Oak Tree ImageThe Tree City USA Program was created by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Becoming a Tree City can show your community's support for the environment and put you on the rapidly growing National list of Tree Cities.

Each state has an Urban Partnership Coordinator who assists communities in obtaining and filing application for certification.

The coordinator then processes the applications and forwards them to the National Arbor Day Foundation for final approval.

After final approval by the National Arbor Day Foundation, a plaque is shipped to the State Coordinator for shipment to each Tree City designee.

Become a Florida Tree City USA

City and county governments, as well as federal military bases, are eligible for certification. To qualify for Tree City USA four standards must be met as established by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters.

  • A Tree Board or Department
  • A Tree Care Ordinance
  • A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita
  • An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation
These standards were established to ensure that every qualifying community would have a viable tree management plan and program. It is important to note that they were also designed so that no community would be excluded because of size.

The Tree City USA Growth Award

For those who go above and beyond the call of duty, there is the Tree City USA Growth Award. Certified communities who spend at least as much as they did the previous year on their urban tree program can qualify. In addition, they must either initiate new tree management activities, or expand their current activities over the previous year.

In 2007, a total of 33 Florida communities received Growth Awards. The Growth Award also qualifies a community to be considered for the Tree City USA of the Year Award. More information can be found at http://www.arborday.org/programs/treeCityUSA/growthAwards.cfm

Tree Campus USA

The NADF has recently initiated the Tree Campus USA program to encourage the students and faculties of colleges and universities to become actively engaged in the management of the trees on their campuses. This involves not only the planting and care of trees, but also a conscientious effort to educate both the student body and the surrounding community as to the benefits that trees provide. The NADF is encouraging colleges to contact them and nominate themselves to become Tree Campuses. More information can be found at http://www.arborday.org/programs/treeCampusUSA/.
